At this time, U.S. railroads began adopting the comfort cab wide-nose designs, the W in Dash 8-40BW reflects this cab style. The distinctive Gull Wing cab roof specified by Santa Fe was purpose-built to clear certain loading facilities at certain industries on the line. These four-axle, high horsepower engines are still in service today in North America.
