This is the earliest and rarest version with aluminum wheels. The black 221 replaced the gray 221's like this one in the '47 line. Features include a painted diecast boiler, 2-6-4 wheel arrangement, detailed driving wheel hardware, aluminum drive wheels, sheet-metal trailing truck, three-position E-unit, headlight plus wire handrails. The number is always stamped below the cab window. It comes with a 221T non-whistling tender which is painted to match the color of the steamer and has the New York Central lettering decals on each side. Many collectors and operators still enjoy the 221. Although it is somewhat under-sized in terms of scale length, there is still a certain charm to this unique-looking locomotive.
