The black 221 replaced the gray 221's like this one in the '47 line. Features include a painted die-cast boiler, 2-6-4 wheel arrangement, detailed driving wheel hardware, black drive wheels, sheet-metal trailing truck, three-position E-unit, headlight plus wire handrails. The number is always stamped below the cab window. It comes with a 221W whistling tender which is painted to match the color of the steamer and has the New York Central lettering decals on each side. Many collectors and operators still enjoy the 221. Although it is somewhat under-sized in terms of scale length, there is still a certain charm to this unique-looking locomotive. Clean examples of this steamer -- especially ones with original and completely intact tender decals -- are rare.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis item has been graded per TCA standards C-6: Very Good based on visual appearance. Both the locomotive and tender show moderate nicks, scratches, and signs of surface rust. Additionally, both items have signs of paint wear, chips, and scuff marks. Red scuff marks are visible on some portions of the body and stream chests. Front pilot portion shows heavier paint wear from repetitive use. The original boxes are included and show rips, tears, and the tender box is missing an outer flap. When tested, locomotive runs well and light functions. Tender whistle does not function reliably.
