The 221 Alco diesel made a brief appearance in 1963 and 1964. During its two-year appearance, the 221 carried three difference roadnames; Rio Grande (1963 and 1964), United States Marine Corps (1964 only) and Santa Fe (1964 only). The Rio Grande was the only diesel of the three 221s to be catalogued. While the Rio Grande is a common item, the United states Marine Corps is a rare item and the Santa Fe is extremely scarce. This Rio Grande features a yellow molded body with black lettering and stripes, traction tire, two-position E-unit and a non-operating rear coupler. It does not contain illumination and there is no front coupler. It also lacks a frame box between the trucks.
