Noisily shuttling through complicated coach yard switches, the deceptively diminutive BB class electric locomotives proved the workhorses of passenger stations in Philadelphia, New York and Long Island. Affectionately dubbed rats by railfans and railroaders, the mighty little boxcabs switched consists for famous name trains and commuter runs alike. First built by Altoona in 1926, the BB class ran in pairs through the 1930s on both Pennsy and Long Island rails. Later B1’s, numbered 5684 to 5697, operated only as single units. Their square headlights easily distinguished these later B1’s. None of this later type was given Long Island livery. Constructed almost entirely of diecast metal, each of these new Lionel models includes headlight, handrail and other detail distinctions specific to their particular roadname and era. Pennsylvania and Long Island versions feature decoration specific to the 1920s and 1930s when the switchers still prototypically operated in pairs and were just beginning to run as single units. Complete with dual ElectroCouplers, the powered BB unit can even run independently in Command Control or Conventional Transformer Mode. Matching sets of heavyweight passenger cars, complete with all-new sprung 4-wheel trucks, are available separately. Features one powered and one non-powered unit, TrainMaster Command Control equipped—able to run in Command Control Mode or in Conventional Transformer Control Mode, powered unit can run independently in Command Control Mode or in Conventional Transformer Control Mode, Odyssey System for speed control with ON/OFF switch, RailSounds 5.0 sound system with custom recorded effects including: Multi-part CrewTalk dialog and TowerCom announcements to create realistic operating scenarios from pulling out of the yard to initiating an emergency stop, adjust blower RPM independent of locomotive speed via a CAB-1 command, multiWhistle effect simulates blasts at different air pressures, creating a realistic variety of sounds with each press of the WHISTLE button, independently adjustable volume control—use your CAB-1 Remote Controller to lower the level of background effects while keeping operator-controlled effects such as the whistle at full volume, many operator controlled effects including CrewTalk dialog and TowerCom announcements are accessible using only a conventional transformer, powerful maintenance-free motor with momentum flywheel in powered unit, directional lighting during both single and paired operation, illuminated marker and classification lights, diecast metal locomotive body, frame and trucks, front ElectroCoupler on each unit for paired operation, powered unit includes front and rear ElectroCouplers for independent running, traction tires, separately applied metal details, cab window glass, illuminated cab interior in powered unit, engineer and fireman figures in power unit. Each unit measures 7 5/8 inches long and operates on an O-31 minimum curve.

This item has been graded per TCA standards C-7: Excellent based on visual appearance.
