When the 763E was originally released, it had many of the same components of the 700E, including a pilot (cowcatcher) that had an opening in the front of the pilot similar to the 700E. The only difference is that the top of the opening on the early pilot was closed, where on the 700E it was machined at the factory to allow installation of the coupler. Late in 1938 Lionel closed the front of the 763E pilot entirely. The early pilot, shown, was renumbered to 763E-11X while the later closed version was given the original part number.
