Built in 1957, these boxcars were one of the first to be equipped with a Hydra-Cushion underframe, designed jointly by Southern Pacific and Stanford University, to help reduce commodity damage from slack action and other in-train shock forces. These cars continued to be seen in revenue service through the early 1990s.
