Just outside the city limits of Germantown, Tennessee, an event of sorts takes place. A classic Corvette and Thunderbird goes up, under, an over as a steam-powered excursion train roars by overhead! The 4501 is a Southern Railway steam locomotive that belongs in the permanent collection of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. This locomotive was primarily used in mainline freight service during the forties. Like the rest of the steam locomotives in the fleet, it was retired and put out to pasture when management completely dieselized by the mid to late forties. The 4501 gained a new lease on life when it was enlisted for use in Southern Railway's Steam Excursion Program of the seventies! This was part of the late W. Graham Claytors program to enlist the support of vintage steam as part of the company's public relations and employee-morale-boosting effort. So what could be more appropriate than a view depicting a steam powered passenger train operating in mainline excursion service during the mid Seventies!Artist: Robert West
