The main problem was the Spitfire's wing; at high speeds the relatively light structure behind the strong leading edge torsion box would flex, changing the airflow and limiting the maximum safe diving speed. The Spiteful includes the new wing design, as well as a modified fuselage to enable the pilot better vision and also a larger rudder and fin to increase stability.
