Trainz 2007 Model Train Layout

Trainz.com store display layout

The Trainz.com display layout built in June 2007 measures 10 x 10 feet. The benchwork is 2x4 framing and legs with a ½” Plywood tabletop, covered with 1/8” Masonite sheeting. The green edging around the layout is made of 1x4s with 1x2 bracing. The structure of the layout is strong enough for a person to walk on.

The track is all Lionel FasTrack. The outer loop has O-60 curves, the inner loop has O-48 curves, and the Figure 8 and sidings are O-36. The switches are all O-36 except for the two forming the crossover between the two loops, which are O-60. All switches are remote controlled. The track is secured to the table using GarGraves track screws, with one screw in every other section.

Controls, Wiring, and Power

The outer loops run on command control, and the figure-8 is wired for conventional operation. The outer loops have both Lionel’s Trainmaster Command Control and MTH’s DCS system installed. It is configured so that both systems can operate simultaneously.

The switches are wired through a Lionel SC-2 controller, and the operating track section is wired through a 14185 TMCC Operating Track Controller.

The buildings and other accessories have 14 volt constant power.

The entire layout, except the Figure 8, is powered by a MTH Z-4000 Transformer. The Figure 8 is powered by a Lionel CW-80 transformer, the type found in most starter sets.

Construction Notes

The layout was constructed by the Trainz.com shop. It took about 3 days to build the table and lay the track, and another week of working off and on to wire it and finish the edging of the benchwork.

The Lionel Trains lettering along the front of the layout is a laser-cut reproduction of Lionel display lettering from the 1950s and will be available on our site in the future. They are not pre-painted.
