HO Electric Locomotives

Electric locomotives were built for a variety of railroad applications, from industrial switching to heavy freight and high-speed passenger service. Choosing the right prototype helps create a more authentic electrified railroad.

• Box-cab electric locomotives
• Steeple-cab electric locomotives
• Mainline freight electric locomotives
• Intercity passenger electric locomotives
• Streamlined electric locomotives
• Articulated electric locomotives
• Modern high-speed electric locomotives

Whether you're modeling mountain railroads, electrified freight corridors, or long-distance passenger routes, selecting the appropriate electric locomotive helps recreate the look and operation of the prototype.

Most HO electric locomotives receive power through the track like other HO scale locomotives, even though their prototypes may have used overhead catenary or third-rail systems. Pantographs and rooftop electrical equipment may be decorative or functional depending on the model, but working overhead wire is generally not required for normal operation.

Depending on availability, models may include DCC-ready electronics, factory-installed decoders, synchronized sound, operating lights, detailed or operating pantographs, and multiple-unit capability. Before purchasing, check the control system, coupler style, minimum curve requirements, power system, and layout compatibility.

Some collectors focus on electrified railroads from North America, while others look for famous European prototypes, specific railroad paint schemes, or limited-production releases. Because electric locomotives are produced less frequently than many diesel models, discontinued versions can become difficult to find.

Vintage, discontinued, and hard-to-find HO electric locomotives remain popular with collectors, while newer releases offer improved detailing, electronics, and operating features for today's layouts.

Whether you're downsizing a collection or helping liquidate an estate, Trainz has been purchasing model train collections for decades. If you're considering selling your HO electric locomotives as part of a collection, learn more about our model train buying process.

What are HO electric locomotives?

HO electric locomotives are approximately 1:87 scale models of railroad locomotives whose prototypes were powered by overhead catenary or third-rail electrical systems. They may represent freight, intercity passenger, industrial, terminal, or high-speed railroad operations.

Do HO electric locomotives require working overhead wires?

Usually not. Most HO electric locomotives receive power through the track. Pantographs and rooftop electrical equipment may be decorative or functional depending on the model, so check the individual locomotive's specifications before operating it with catenary.

Can I find vintage and discontinued HO electric locomotives at Trainz?

Yes. Depending on availability, Trainz may offer vintage, discontinued, pre-owned, estate-find, and hard-to-find HO electric locomotives from a variety of manufacturers and railroads.

Do HO electric locomotives come with DCC and sound?

Many newer models do. Inventory may include DCC-ready, DCC-equipped, and sound-equipped HO electric locomotives depending on the manufacturer and release.

What should I check before buying an HO electric locomotive?

Review the locomotive's condition, control and power system, minimum curve requirements, coupler style, road name, and operating features. Larger electric locomotives may require broader curves and additional layout clearance.
