What Is G Scale?
G Scale is part of the large-scale model railroading hobby and is especially well known for garden railways. G Scale trains commonly operate on 45mm gauge track, but the models themselves are not limited to one exact proportion. Equipment commonly grouped within G Scale has been produced in several proportions, including approximately 1:22.5, 1:24, and 1:29.
The larger physical size provides room for substantial detail and makes G Scale suitable for indoor displays, large layouts, and outdoor railroads. Because proportions, dimensions, couplers, and minimum curve requirements can differ between products, compare individual specifications when combining equipment from different manufacturers or product lines. If you're comparing G Scale with other popular train sizes, our Model Train Scales Explained guide explains the major model train scales and their differences.
