Trainz brings you one of the most diverse collections of Lionel train parts in the world. Currently we have over 6000 different Lionel train parts in stock. Since we are so passionate about helping you fix up your trains, we have dedicated way too much time over the years in creating this massive parts inventory and photoing each one to create the best visual parts reference on the Internet. We are continually adding parts that we receive in train collections, service station parts inventories, and dealer inventories, so we have thousands of new, original, and reproduction parts that you cannot find anywhere else. We also uniquely photo each part on our 1/4" scale grid background so you can see exactly what size the part is and many times we provide multiple photos so you can be sure the part you need is the part you are ordering. We employ a dedicated parts man and an assistant to continually add new stock almost daily as well as to pull parts to fulfill orders, so our selection is ever-changing.
We have been building our parts inventory starting in 1998 and since we have purchased the parts inventories of many Lionel service stations we have a large selection of original parts. Since some of these service stations also stripped trains for parts, we have many of these "used" but original parts mixed in as well. Occasionally a broken part that should have ben thrown out will slip through, but you can count on our customer service team to correct that for you in the unlikely situation that it arises.
We have bought thousands of new parts directly from Lionel or acquired them through acquisitions of other stores. We typically identify these parts as "New" to the best of our ability to determine that. Many of these parts came to us unidentified and we have done our best to find the correct part number.
We also have a huge inventory of reproduction parts from an array of small manufacturers that have come and gone over the years. Many times these are difficult to discern between what is a repro part and what is a new from Lionel part, but we do our best. Scott is somewhat active in the parts end of the business (his hobby) and he is familiar with most of the repro companies and what they have made since he has been buying and selling parts since the mid 1970's, but he hardly sees all the parts that are added.
For older used parts you will probably not receive the exact part shown in the photo, but one that we think is similar enough and will be suitable as shown the photo. If you get something that you feel was not reflective of what was shown in the photo, our apologies and just contact us via email and we will do our best to make it right for you.
Parts assemblies that are sold as new like motors, circuit boards, smoke units, controllers, etc. are expected by us to be functioning properly, but we have not tested everything. We have rebuilt e-units, whistle relays, whistles and other assemblies and we identify them as such. They should all work. If you experience a problem that is not easily rectified by you, our apologies and just contact us via email and we will do our best to make it right. We do not however "rebuild" everything. For example we do not fix all the broken coupler springs in the trucks we sell, we hope that you will be happy to get the parts you need at a good price and will take care of small things like that yourself.
We do our best to find the correct part number for our parts, but sometimes we just can't find them, or they don't exist, so we do make up some part numbers. We do have over 70,000 good part numbers and descriptions in our database, so we do try hard. Sometimes we just add a number after the model number like a 2026-180, or when we know a part is very similar to another part we usually just add an "X" somewhere in the part number. So a 2026-114X looks real similar to the 2026-114 but something is different. This is usually obvious in the picture, the title, or we specify it in our description. When we come across a Lionel part that we know is a modern era part and it really isn't similar to anything else, we make up a part number like 8000X-111. That means it is probably from a MPC or Modern era train, but we can't identify it. We figure our picture and title might help you discover it and that's better than it sitting in some big box of stuff we can't figure out. If you know what the part number is of any of our made up parts numbers we would love to get a message from you, so we can update it correctly. When we can't figure out who made a particular part we assign it the manufacturer ACME - the same place that Wile E. Coyote got his stuff.
Over the years Lionel has changed their part numbering scheme from 4 digit part numbers that generally started with the model number of the item they were first used in to to the 10 digit numbers starting in the modern era with two dashes in them, to the most recent change around 2015 with 10 digit numbers without dashes. We currently only have since part number field so this is a bit of a mess and parts can be in our system in any of the 3 ways. We plan on adding an alternative part number field in our system sometime in the future to address this, but for now, here is what we have done to deal with this part number "problem"
These are all the same part number:
675-8
600-0675-008
6000675008
As you can see when Lionel came up with the 10-digit scheme they pre-filled number with leading zeros to keep the order "right".
One last thing is Lionel uses the middle digit in the first 3-git group of numbers to generally encode the first digit of the product number, so in many cases we have created what we think is a more appropriate short part number that looks like the postwar numbers. So for example we regularly converted a Lionel part number like 610-2737-015 to just 12737-15. Since this is the black roof that is used on the Lionel 6-12737 Whistle shed.
We are sorry that we can't help you figure out what parts you need, but to help you as much as possible we have spent an untold number of hours sorting parts, categorizing them, and most importantly taking pictures of them on our 1/4" grid background to provide you with the best chance of finding what you need.
