Set your model train up with the right size tracks and watch 'er fly!
When you make your model train layout, it's important to keep in mind that you'll need a closed loop, so your train can keep chugging around the track indefinitely. To make the closed loop, you'll need 2 basic train track pieces: straights and curves. If you want to make a more complex layout, you'll need a third type of track, called a switch.
Straights are the simplest part of a model railroad track. Just like their name implies, they're simply a straight stretch of railroad. When you picture a "train track" in your mind, you're probably thinking of a straight.
Curves are the other essential track piece for your model railroad. Curves are the curved railroad track parts that help you make that closed loop. A curved piece usually connects 2 straights and allows your train to turn.
If you only want to make one route for your model train, you technically only need straights and curves. However, if you want to create multiple routes for your model trains, you can use a track switch. A track switch is the part of a railroad track that allows it to branch off in 2 or more directions.
