The Western Maryland Railway, recognized by its WM reporting mark, was founded in 1852 to serve western Maryland and surrounding regions. Known for its freight and passenger services, including connections to coal fields and industrial centers, it became a key regional carrier before merging into the Chessie System in the early 1970s.
