When Lionel Legacy was first introduced, locomotives were built around modular Lionel Legacy electronics, allowing components to be serviced and upgraded individually. These early Lionel Legacy locomotives featured an upgraded Legacy R4LC receiver, replacing the earlier R2LC receiver used in TMCC systems.
The R4LC Legacy receiver can receive and decode 9-bit command strings from the Lionel Legacy Command Control (LCS) controller, enabling advanced speed control, enhanced locomotive response, and full Legacy command functionality. While there are multiple firmware and code variations of the R4LC, the vast majority of Lionel Legacy R4LC receivers are cross-compatible and will operate correctly in any modular Lionel Legacy locomotive application.
