Before the advent of Odyssey speed control, Lionel used two primary types of motor drivers: ACDR – for AC motors, capable of operating up to 2 AC motors, and DC – for DC can motors, capable of operating up to 2 motors. Eventually, Odyssey speed control became the standard for Lionel locomotives produced overseas. Over the years, several software versions have been used with Odyssey modular motor drivers, many of which are now obsolete. Fortunately, a handful of stable software versions remain available as replacements for the various earlier versions.
In early 2010, Lionel introduced locomotives equipped with the Cruise Commander system. These boards, referred to as “Cruise Lite” DCDE boards, were produced in a single run but can, in some cases, replace DCDS Odyssey 1 motor drivers.
