This is a Broadway Limited 2562 HO Scale New York Central Class S1b 4-8-4 Niagara #6011 (black, graphite) equipped with Sound and DCC using the advanced Paragon2™ system. The New York Central was late to adopt the 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, as their Mohawks and Hudsons performed exceptionally well for years. However, when locomotive #6000 (Class S1a) arrived from ALCO as the first 2-cylinder 4-8-4, it marked a turning point in the railroad’s steam development. Twenty-five more engines of the S1b class followed, and by 1945, these Niagaras became the favorite power on the line. Designed for dual service, they were capable of handling both freight and passenger trains but are most fondly remembered for hauling the New York Central’s famous Limiteds with strength and reliability.
This detailed model features the all-new Paragon2™ Sound & Control System with synchronized puffing smoke, chuff sounds, and variable smoke intensity. It includes an integral DCC decoder with Back EMF for the best slow-speed performance in both DC and DCC operation. The precision drive mechanism is engineered for smooth performance under heavy loads, powered by a 5-pole can motor with a skew-wound armature. The locomotive is finished in an authentic paint scheme with prototypical detailing, including golden white LED lighting for the headlight and rear light, and factory-installed engineer and fireman figures. The ABS plastic body sits atop a heavy die-cast metal chassis for maximum tractive effort, and the model includes two Kadee-compatible operating metal knuckle couplers. Additional features include all-driver drive, all-wheel electrical pickup (except for pilot and trailing trucks), separately applied handrails, ladders, whistle, and brass bell, along with operating cab roof vents. The model operates on Code 70, 83, and 100 rail, with a recommended minimum radius of 22 inches.
