Here is a Lionel 1425B Steam Switcher set from 1948. The 1656 steam engine was classified by Lionel as a Switcher steam locomotive. It is a small steam engine and was available as a separate sale item or in work train sets. It shares its boiler casting with the 1615, 1625 and 1665 steam switchers. The 1656 bell-ringing steam switcher was introduced in 1948 after a one-year absence of a steam switchers in the Lionel family. Both the 1665 and the 1656 locomotives are the pinnacle of postwar steam switchers. The combination of high quality, durability and a unique bell-ringing feature continues to make this a highly desirable locomotive. Since the locomotive is designed to haul only a few cars, it will look great working in any freight yard. The 1656 switcher has the following standard features: an 0-4-0 wheel arrangement with detailed driving wheel hardware, black die-cast boiler, three-position E-unit, headlight, wire handrailings plus a front step and an operating front coupler. A slope-back tender was usually the 6403B such as this one, but occassionally a 2403B tender is found with this locomotive. Standard features on either tender include metal staple-end trucks with an operating coupler and a functional bell located inside the tender shell. There is an on/off switch located underneath the tender which is used to operate the bell. Also included on the tender are two wires protruding from the front. These wires have a banana plug on the end and connect to two terminals inside the switchers cab. The 6456 Lehigh Valley hopper, along with its earlier cousin the 2456 Lehigh Valley Hopper, were the first new short hoppers introduced by Lionel in the postwar era. The 6456 was included in practically every catalogued set as well as being available for separate sale. This has made the 6456 hopper a common item. However, being that most were introduced in sets and 'played with by the children', finding a 6456 in nice condition will require some searching and effort. Standard features of the 6456 include metal trucks, painted body, white lettering, two operating couplers and a single brakewheel. The 6465 tank car is a unique tank car in the Lionel family. It's fame comes from the fact it had the longest production run of any single-style Lionel tank car. Additionally, the 6465 contained the widest variety of roadnames used by Lionel on a single style tank car. The 6465 was introduced by Lionel in 1948 as a Sunoco tank car. From there it carried numerous roadnames such as Gulf, Cities Services and Lionel Lines. Production of the last 6465 tank car was in 1966. Features include Staple-end trucks, two operating couplers, dual metal handrailings, footsteps at all four corners and two screws securing the body to the frame. The caboose is the uncommon 6257X with couplers at both ends [all other 6257s have a coupler at only one end]..
