LCRU’s
Beginning around 1995, when Lionel first introduced the TrainMaster Command Control (TMCC) system, the “standard” electronics of the era were designed with limited modularity. During this time, most Lionel locomotives were still powered by AC motors. This generation of electronics remained in use until approximately 1999–2000. When Lionel later moved manufacturing overseas, DC motors became the standard power source for their locomotives. Prior to this transition, Lionel locomotives were equipped with LCRU-1 and LCRU-2 boards. LCRU stands for Lionel Command Reverse Unit. Early LCRU-1 boards used pin-style wire connections, while the later LCRU-2 boards introduced the white Leoco-style connectors that continued to be used on many Lionel command boards well into 2011.
Please note: LCRU boards are designed exclusively for single and dual-AC motor applications. They are not compatible with locomotives equipped with DC can motors.

Lionel LCRX command control boards are designed for non-powered locomotives and rolling stock equipped with TrainMaster Command Control (TMCC) but no drive motors. These LCRX electronics control directional lighting, front- and rear-coil couplers, and auxiliary functions, such as strobe lights and end-of-train (EOT) devices.
LCRX boards also support Lionel RailSounds operation via serial data and are fully compatible with RailSounds 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 4.0, and 4E systems. Please note:LCRX boards are not compatible with RailSounds 5.0.
Railsounds 2.0
Lionel RailSounds 2.0 was introduced in late 1995 and remained in production until the release of RailSounds 2.5, which introduced TowerCom and CrewTalk features. RailSounds 2.0 systems use a single, self-contained circuit board identified by a large aluminum heat sink mounted on one end.
RailSounds 2.0 electronics are fully compatible with all versions of LCRU and LCRX command boards, as well as the modular receivers introduced in late 1999 and later. This makes RailSounds 2.0 a reliable option for restoring or repairing early Lionel TMCC-equipped locomotives and rolling stock.
Railsounds 2.5
Lionel RailSounds 2.5 was introduced in late 1997 and remained in use throughout U.S.-based production of AC-motor locomotives into the early 2000s. While RailSounds 2.5 is physically the same size as RailSounds 2.0, it introduced advanced sound features, including TowerCom and CrewTalk.
RailSounds 2.5 sound boards are road name and road number specific, with prime mover sound sets tailored to each locomotive type. EMD locomotives, in particular, feature multiple distinct sound variations, while horns and whistles are uniquely matched to each application for improved realism.
RailSounds 2.5 boards are fully compatible with all versions of LCRU and LCRX command boards, as well as the modular receivers introduced in late 1999 and later, making them ideal for authentic Lionel TMCC restorations and repairs.
