During the early 30‘s Lionel was experiencing a decline in sales, and the future of the company was in jeopordy. At the same time, Marx was increasing their toy train market and competing directly with Lionel and reporting a profit. In order to increase profits, Lionel produced two new innovative products to compete in the highly competitive toy market, a premium model of the UP City of Salina and a novelty item - a clockwork-powered hand car featuring Disney‘s Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
On a side note the Disney characters were made of composition. This term is a collective term used to describe a variety of pulped-wood or paper-based mixtures from which doll heads and bodies were made. Composition was originally produced because it was a less expensive alternative to wooden dolls, which allowed Lionel to sell their line of novelty items as low as a dollar during the depression.
These two products were very popular and enabled Lionel to make payments to creditors and stay in business. The success of the novelty line prompted Lionel to include 3 more hand cars in this very popular line. Those cars included the 1103 Peter Rabbit Chick Mobile from 1935-1937, 1105 Santa Claus & Disney‘s Mickey Mouse from 1935-1936, and 1107 Disney‘s Donald Duck and Pluto from 1936-1937.
