The locomotive operates in forward, neutral and reverse, by operating the included transformer. The transformer makes it easy for anyone at any age, who is just getting started, to becoming a great engineer! The locomotive offers a realistic simulation of a real steam locomotive by coming equipped with a smoke unit; this provides the puffing smoke from the smoke stack as it chugs around your layout. The locomotive is designed with a die-cast metal body with a metal frame and trucks. This is not a toy engine that's going to fall apart on you. It is more than capable of standing up to a lot of play. The tender, the car that follows the locomotive, provides the coal to feed the steam locomotive. The tender provides the sound of the whistle just like on a real railroad! The operating coupler on the back of the tender provides you with the ease of hooking up your rolling stock (freight cars). All of the freight cars come equipped with operating couplers. The boxcar allows you to transport whatever your imagination can come up with, with its opening doors. The searchlight car is a fun car to have on your layout with its adjustable light that you can move in any direction. At night time, or when operating with the lights off, you'll still see your train moving swiftly along the track with not only the searchlight beaming, but also because the locomotive features a real lighted headlight and the interior of the red caboose is lighted too!
The length of the train with its rolling stock measures 46 3/4 long. The size of the engine and freight cars is O gauge, and commonly referred to as 1:48 scale, one of the more popular sizes with model railroaders today.
