Here is a Lionel HO Scale GS-4 Northern American Freedom Train 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive and Tender #4449 from 1975-76. This is a commemorative model of The American Freedom Train Locomotive. Built during WWII, it was restored in 1975 to pull the American Freedom Train on a 21 month tour. This model is from Lionel's short-lived HO line from the mid-'70s. Features include plastic construction, plastic trucks, horn-hook couplers on the tender and knuckle couplers for the locomotive, metal wheels & axles and a motor.
First introduced in the early 20th century, the 4-8-4 to rail yards by storm primarily hauling coal and other forms of freight across state lines in the US and rail-ways in various other countries. While later models would improve on the 4-8-4's limitation, this locomotive still made its place in history as a pioneer of 20th century rail-road industry, and is featured in some museums today as a testament to how far the industry has truly come!
