In the early 2000s, Lionel introduced the R2LC Modular Command Receiver, initially available as an upgrade kit that let hobbyists convert “conventional-command-ready” locomotives to full command control by replacing a single internal board. Over time, Lionel began producing locomotives with the R2LC pre-installed for seamless command operation.
The R2LC uses different software versions. Unique products such as the Locomotive Backshop and Roaring Lion Car used custom code, but C08 eventually became the standard for nearly all command-equipped locomotives from 2000 to 2012. C13 was used in select Odyssey and Cruise M locomotives, also known as ERR Cruise Commander models.
Alongside the R2LC, Lionel developed a full line of modular components, including Railsounds 3.0, 4.0, 4E, 5.0, motor drivers, motherboards, and smoke units. At Trainz, we offer the largest inventory of authentic Lionel command control components, making it easy to upgrade, repair, or expand your Lionel layout.
