Here is an Diamond Scale IP-420 HO Inspection/Repair Pit.The kit includes instructions, the Hydrocal cast pit, and a sealed bag with two cast metal light poles and a cast metal telephone box. Buyer will need to provide his/her own rails. The pit is 10 3/4" long and is mounted on a 1/4" wood substrate. There are steps at one end of the pit. Background (per instruction sheet) Upon returning to the engine terminal after a run, and before proceeding to the engine house for maintenance, the locomotive running gear would be inspected for loose or broken parts, cracks in the frame, cracked wheels, or other damaged parts. A concrete pit between the rails made inspection of the undercarriage and running gear quicker and easier. The pit was generally located by the terminal inbound track. Access to the pit was by steps at one or at both ends of the pit or, occasionally, by a tunnel from the side passing under the track.
